AUDITION ANNOUNCEMENT:
ROCK OF AGES
Phoenix Productions is looking for a diverse slate of performers for its production of Rock of Ages, playing Friday, July 10th through Sunday, July 12th at The Count Basie Center.
It’s the tail end of the big, bad 1980s in Hollywood, and the party has been raging hard. Aqua Net, Lycra, lace and liquor flow freely at one of the Sunset Strip’s last legendary venues, a place where rock legend Stacee Jaxx takes the stage and scantily clad groupies line up to turn their fantasies into reality. Amidst the madness, aspiring rock star (and resident toilet cleaner) Drew dreams of taking the stage as the next big thing while he longs for small-town girl Sherri, fresh off the bus from Kansas with stars in her eyes. But the rock ’n’ roll fairy tale is about to end when German developers sweep into town with plans to turn the fabled Strip into just another capitalist strip mall. Can Drew, Sherri and the gang save the strip – and themselves – before it’s too late? Only the music of hit bands Styx, Journey, Bon Jovi, Whitesnake, Pat Benatar and more hold the answer.

32 bars from pop/rock or musical theatre song in the style of the show. Please bring your sheet music in the correct key in a notebook or published book for the accompanist.

Rehearsal dates:
Rehearsal begin on or about May 26th, typically three (3) weekday evenings and one (1) weekend day. We are hoping to lock in a, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday or Friday evening and Saturday daytime rehearsal schedule. More rehearsal days will be required as the production opening approaches.

Character BREAKDOWN
NOTE: The original characters were imagined on the binary and written with he/him or she/her pronouns as you will see in the following descriptions. However, we seek to be as inclusive as possible and ask gender non-conforming, gender queer, transgender and non-binary actors to list on the audition form the roles they most identify with.
DREW BOLEY
An appealing, good-guy rocker with great, easy comedic timing, a boyish charm, vulnerability, and a very strong rock tenor voice. Drew works at the legendary Bourbon Room hoping and waiting for his dreams to come true. He finds an instant attraction to Sherrie, the beautiful new arrival from the Midwest, who encourages him to go after his dreams.

SHERRIE CHRISTIAN
An innocent Midwestern girl stepping right off the bus into a new world to pursue her dreams of stardom. Strong comedic timing, strong rock belt, good movement ability. Should be comfortable in revealing/skimpy clothing.

LONNY BARNETT
The narrator of the piece, charming, mischievous, welcoming, vibrant personality, a guy who would be fun to spend one drunken night with. Strong, honest comedic timing/improv skills and strong rock vocals.

DENNIS DUPREE
A classic stoner type guy who runs the famous Bourbon Room club. Torn about whether he should sell the club to Hertz, a German businessman. Very strong comedic timing. A laid-back, easy-going, real dude. Bari-tenor rock vocals.

STACEE JAXX
A sexy rock star. Decided to leave his successful hair/metal rock band to try it solo. Self-important, confident intriguing in all the wrong ways, the ultimate bad boy; he is all about sex, drugs, and rock-n-roll. Great strong comedic timing and strong rock tenor voice.

JUSTICE
Strong Black woman and motherly presence, an easy sensuality about her, once a performer, she now operates a strip club where Sherrie winds up working. Takes on the maternal role for the girls that work for her. Strong, soulful vocals and belt needed.

HERTZ KLINEMANN
An attractive older German male. Uptight, cold, intimidating businessman trying to buy up the Strip to develop it. The bad guy of the piece. Strong comedic timing and baritone vocals. Ability to do German accent required.

FRANZ KLINEMANN
Male identifying actor to play Hertz’s son, young German male. Works for his father but not by choice. Pressured and intimidated by his father. Shy, gentle with a big heart. Strong vocals and comedic timing. Ability to do German accent required.

Are you ready to step into the spotlight?
Phoenix Productions is always looking for eager and talented volunteers to sing and dance in our musical productions. Auditions usually take place 6-8 weeks prior to the performance dates listed and casting notices are posted on our website and social channels one month prior to the auditions.

Here are a few helpful hints to make your audition a success!
1. Gather your sheet music! (Don’t have sheet music in your key? Visit www.musicnotes.com or www.sheetmusic.com to purchase and download show music in your key.) Be prepared to sing 16 to 32 bars of a song that shows off your voice.
2. Always choose music that is consistent with the style of the show for which you are auditioning.
3. Make sure to clearly mark your music for the accompanist to show where to begin and end. If you don’t where to start your audition selection, a safe general rule is to count back from the end of the song as this usually shows your performance best.)
4. Practice your audition. Always remember the production team is looking for great performers not just people who can sing.
5. Be prepared to learn a short dance combination. Depending on the show and the wishes of the production team, there may be a dance audition. If so, a combination will be taught at auditions.
6. Be sure to bring or wear suitable dance attire.
