For 35 years, Phoenix Productions has been dedicated to the mission of providing quality theatrical experiences on both sides of the footlights. After three decades of performances at the Count Basie Center for the Arts, the organizations have merged, combining and solidifying their regional impact on the performing arts.

AUDITION ANNOUNCEMENT:
pirates! the penzance musical
Phoenix Productions is looking for a diverse slate of performers for its production of Pirates! The Penzance Musical, playing Friday, September 25th through Sunday, September 27th at The Count Basie Center.
PIRATES! THE PENZANCE MUSICAL is a jazzy and joyous re-imagining of the beloved Gilbert & Sullivan crowd-pleasing classic. Transporting the pirates from Penzance to 1800s New Orleans, this outrageously clever romp sizzles with Caribbean rhythms and French Quarter flair with brand-new orchestrations as well as a brand-new book by Tony Award® winner Rupert Holmes.
Persons of all ethnicities, gender expressions, cultural heritage / background, and body types are encouraged to audition.
Audition Dates:
Monday July 27th 7:00PM – 9:30PM at Phoenix Productions (59 Chestnut St, Red Bank NJ)
Tuesday, July 28th 7:00PM – 9:30PM at New Brunswick PAC (9 Livingston Ave, New Brunswick NJ)
Saturday, August 1st 10:00AM – 2:00PM at Phoenix Productions (59 Chestnut St, Red Bank NJ)
Some performers may be asked to a call-back on Monday, August 3rd from 7:00PM to 10:00PM at Phoenix Productions.
See character descriptions below. All auditionees are asked to prepare the following:
32 bars from classic/golden age musical theatre song in the style of the show. Please bring your sheet music in the correct key in a notebook or published book for the accompanist.
If you have one available, please bring a copy of your headshot and resume.

Rehearsal dates:
Rehearsals begin on or about August 10th, typically three (3) weekday evenings and one (1) weekend day. We are hoping to lock in a Monday, Tuesday, Thursday evening and Saturday daytime rehearsal schedule. More rehearsal days will be required as the production opening approaches.

Character BREAKDOWN
NOTE: The original characters were imagined on the binary and written with he/him or she/her pronouns as you will see in the following descriptions. However, we seek to be as inclusive as possible and ask gender non-conforming, gender queer, transgender and non-binary actors to list on the audition form the roles they most identify with.
WILLIAM S. GILBERT / MAJOR-GENERAL STANLEY
Gilbert is British and unrepentantly “respectable”. Stanley is ex-military, world traveler and an avowed former philanderer aged enough to have 8 grown daughters from multiple mothers – and the comedic mirror of Gilbert. Dexterous vocal ability required – two tricky patter songs plus serious comedy skills – aging effects can be achieved by time or make-up.
ARTHUR SULLIVAN / THE SERGEANT OF POLICE
Sullivan is a strong personality willing to fight for his residual check. Sergeant is a stalwart, stoic, unrepentant risk—averse lawman afraid of his own shadow – the comedic opposite of Sullivan. Baritone leaning toward bass.
FREDERIC
21 years old – passionate, wide-eyed, innocent, and Tenor. Our hero. Must be willing to learn stage fencing.
RUTH
Frederic’s nanny and now a pirate “Jill of all trades” - Alto
PIRATE KING (Santiago du Bouchard)
Braggard and narcissist -the last of the pirate royal line and proud to sing about it. Bari-Tenor with strong upper and lower register. Must be willing to learn stage fencing.
MABEL STANLEY
The youngest and loveliest of Stanley’s daughters, a feminist with a twist, strong yet feminine in charge woman – Soprano with a jazz flair.
GENERAL STANLEY’S DAUGHTERS
Ages 18 – 45+, all lovely debutantes and fine examples of Stanleys exploits around the globe as a Major-General. All strong singers. Body type and skin tone has no bearing – they are strong women, proudly single looking to change the world (unless they meet the right person whether policeman or pirate).

Phoenix Productions busca un elenco diverso de intérpretes para su producción de ¡PIRATAS! El musical de Penzance, que se representará del viernes 25 de septiembre al domingo 27 de septiembre en el Count Basie Center. ¡PIRATAS! EL MUSICAL DE PENZANCE es una reinterpretación alegre y con toques de jazz del querido clásico de Gilbert y Sullivan, que siempre ha cautivado al público. Trasladando a los piratas de Penzance a la Nueva Orleans del siglo XIX, esta obra tremendamente ingeniosa rebosa ritmos caribeños y el encanto del Barrio Francés, con orquestaciones totalmente nuevas, así como un libreto inédito del ganador del premio Tony® Rupert Holmes.
Se anima a personas de todas las etnias, expresiones de género, orígenes culturales y tipos de cuerpo a presentarse a la audición.

DESCRIPCIÓN DE LOS PERSONAJES:
NOTA: Los personajes originales se concibieron desde una perspectiva binaria y se escribieron utilizando los pronombres «él» o «ella», tal y como se puede observar en las siguientes descripciones. WILLIAM S. GILBERT / GENERAL DE DIVISIÓN STANLEY
Gilbert es británico y, sin remordimientos, «respetable». Stanley es un exmilitar, trotamundos y antiguo mujeriego confeso, con la edad suficiente como para tener ocho hijas adultas de distintas madres, y es el contrapunto cómico de Gilbert. Se requiere gran destreza vocal —dos canciones con ritmo rápido y complicado, además de grandes dotes para la comedia—; los efectos de envejecimiento pueden lograrse con el paso del tiempo o mediante maquillaje.
ARTHUR SULLIVAN / EL SARGENTO DE POLICÍA
Sullivan es una personalidad fuerte dispuesta a luchar por su pensión de jubilación. El sargento es un agente de la ley incondicional, estoico, impenitente y reacio al riesgo, que teme a su propia sombra: el opuesto cómico de Sullivan. Barítono con tendencia al bajo.
FREDERIC
21 años: apasionado, ingenuo, inocente y tenor. Nuestro héroe. Debe estar dispuesto a aprender esgrima escénica.
RUTH
La niñera de Frederic y ahora una pirata «multifuncional» — contralto.
REY PIRATA (Santiago du Bouchard)
Fanfarrón y narcisista: el último de la estirpe real pirata y orgulloso de cantarlo. Barítono-tenor con registros agudos y graves potentes. Debe estar dispuesto a aprender esgrima escénica.
MABEL STANLEY
La más joven y encantadora de las hijas de Stanley, una feminista con un toque peculiar, una mujer fuerte pero femenina y con iniciativa: soprano con un toque de jazz.
Las hijas del general Stanley:
Edades entre 18 y 45+ años; todas ellas encantadoras debutantes y excelentes ejemplos de las hazañas de los Stanley por todo el mundo como general de división. Todas deben ser buenas cantantes. El tipo de cuerpo y el tono de piel no importan: son mujeres fuertes, orgullosamente solteras y con ganas de cambiar el mundo (a menos que conozcan a la persona adecuada, ya sea policía o pirata).

Are you ready to step into the spotlight?
Phoenix Productions is always looking for eager and talented volunteers to sing and dance in our musical productions. Auditions usually take place 6-8 weeks prior to the performance dates listed and casting notices are posted on our website and social channels one month prior to the auditions.

Here are a few helpful hints to make your audition a success!
1. Gather your sheet music! (Don’t have sheet music in your key? Visit www.musicnotes.com or www.sheetmusic.com to purchase and download show music in your key.) Be prepared to sing 16 to 32 bars of a song that shows off your voice.
2. Always choose music that is consistent with the style of the show for which you are auditioning.
3. Make sure to clearly mark your music for the accompanist to show where to begin and end. If you don’t where to start your audition selection, a safe general rule is to count back from the end of the song as this usually shows your performance best.)
4. Practice your audition. Always remember the production team is looking for great performers not just people who can sing.
5. Be prepared to learn a short dance combination. Depending on the show and the wishes of the production team, there may be a dance audition. If so, a combination will be taught at auditions.
6. Be sure to bring or wear suitable dance attire.
7. Remember to have fun!
