Auditions announced for Phoenix’s revival of Into the Woods, opening at the Count Basie Theatre in September!

 

 Producer Chrissy Paccillo has assembled her production staff and announced open auditions for the September production of Stephen Sondheim’s Into the Woods.

Heading up the artistic staff as Director is Chris Tomaino, a newcomer to Phoenix with a track record of 30 years of New Jersey theatre. Andrew Macirowski returns as musical director, a role he has played for several Phoenix shows, most recently for A Christmas Story.

Tom Martini has signed on as set designer, Linda Fitzgerald returns to design costumes and Anthony Calicchio continues his role as Phoenix’s favorite lighting designer.

Open auditions will be held on Saturday, July 15th from 11am to 3pm, and on Tuesday and Wednesday, July 18th and 19th from 7 to 9pm. Callbacks will be by appointment the following week.

As always at Phoenix, all roles are open and will remain so until the close of open auditions. All types are encouraged to audition. Color/Ethnicity-Blind Casting. The director is looking for excellent actor/singers, particularly unique and interesting types. Excellent vocal and acting skills a must.

The artistic staff advises those auditioning to prepare 16 bars of a Stephen Sondheim song, or by another composer/lyricist with a similar tone.

All auditions and rehearsals will be at the Phoenix Performing Arts Center, 59 Chestnut Street in Red Bank. The show will run at the Count Basie Theatre from Friday, September 15th through Sunday, September 24th.

CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS

NARRATOR/MYSTERIOUS MAN - An disgruntled young man, in his teens. Stripped of his electronics, he is “forced” to read the story of Into the Woods and becomes our reluctant narrator. He will also double as The Mysterious Man: a mischievous vagrant and nosy meddler. He is a good-natured protector and observer. Male, Teen/Adult, 18-25, Range: G2 - Eb4

THE BAKER - A harried and insecure baker who is simple and loving, yet protective of his family. He wants his wife to be happy and is willing to do anything to ensure her happiness but refuses to let others fight his battles. Heartful and vulnerable, yet determined, must be an excellent actor. Male, Adult, 30’s-40’s, Range: Ab2 - G4

THE BAKER'S WIFE - Determined and bright woman who wishes to be a mother. She leads a simple, yet satisfying life and is very low-maintenance yet proactive in her endeavors. Practical, independent with a hidden sense of adventure. Comic ability a plus. Must be an excellent actor.

Female, Adult, 30’s-40’s, Range: F3 - G5

THE WITCH - Sarcastic, ugly-then-gorgeous, obsessive protector of Rapunzel. Aggressive and scary, yet a nurturing, loving, if misguided, mother. Comic ability a plus! Female, Adult. 30’s-50’s, Range: F3 - G5

CINDERELLA - A young, earnest maiden constantly mistreated by her stepmother and stepsisters. Unsure but determined. She’s a much stronger person than she thinks. Female, Young Adult, 20’s, Range: G3 - G5

JACK - The feckless Giant killer who is 'almost a man.' Adventurous, naive, energetic, and bright-eyed. Easily excited and eager to make good. Endless energy required! Male, Young Adult or Teen, 18-30, Range: B2 - G4

JACK'S MOTHER - Browbeating and weary, Jack's protective mother is independent and strong-willed. Female, Adult, 50’s-60’s, Range: Bb3 - Gb5

LITTLE RED RIDINGHOOD - A spoiled young girl who is strong-willed, quick-witted, fearless, yet youthful and naive. Tough, inquisitive, bold and unaware of the real world. Female, 18-30 yrs old, Range: Bb3 - F5

CINDERELLA'S MOTHER/GRANNY/GIANT’S WIFE - Deceased with her soul guarding and aiding her daughter from a tree. A cantakerous old woman with a flair for the dramatic. The Giant's wife is an angry and vengeful 'monster.' She is seeking restitution for her loss. Voiceover. Female, Adult, 40’s-50’s, Range: E4 - F4

CINDERELLA'S PRINCE* - Vain, sexy and handsome, he is a disloyal lover who is currently searching for the next new, exciting thing. Male, Adult, 20’s-30’s, Range: B2 - F4

WOLF* - Hungry and insatiable hunter who takes advantage of the weak by misleading and captivating his prey. Sly and sexy, with a wicked sense of humor. Male, Adult, Range: Bb2 - Gb4

CINDERELLA'S STEPMOTHER - The mean-spirited, demanding stepmother of Cinderella. Beautiful and driven. She’ll do just about anything to get what she wants. Female, Adult, 40’s-50’s, Range: A3 - F#5

FLORINDA and LUCINDA - Cinderella's stepsisters who are black of heart. They follow in their mother's footsteps of abusing Cinderella. Loud, obnoxious and self-centered. Female, 25-35 yrs old, Range: C4 - Ab5

RAPUNZEL - A loopy-but-lovely maiden who is sheltered by the Witch and terribly lonely. She yearns to experience the world. Innocent and naive, with a sense of humor. Female, Adult 20’s-30’s, Range: B3 - A5

RAPUNZEL'S PRINCE - Just as vain, sexy and handsome as his Prince brother, he is always chasing the newest, most exciting endeavor. Bold and confident, with a swagger that gets the attention of the ladies. Male, Adult , 20-35, Range: C#3 - E4

THE STEWARD - The Prince and royal family’s faithful servant. Willing to go to great lengths to do his job. Male or Female, Adult

COW - Male or Female , non-speaking (except for “Moo”). Good comedic timing.

Auditions announced for Phoenix’s revival of West Side Story, opening at the Count Basie Theatre in July!

Producer Jim Marhold has assembled his production staff and announced open auditions for the July production of West Side Story.

Heading up the artistic staff as Director is Anthony Greco who directed the Phoenix revivals of White Christmas and Ragtime. Bob Sammond returns as musical director, a role he has played for many, many Phoenix shows. Jessica O’Brien will choreograph. Her last Phoenix assignment was as the director/choreographer of Evita in 2015.

Ashley Cusack and Tom Martini have signed on as the set design team, Joanne Penrose returns to design costumes and Anthony Calicchio continues his role as Phoenix’s favorite lighting designer.

Open auditions will be held on

Saturday, May 13th from noon to 3pm,

Monday, May 15th from 7 to 9pm and

Wednesday, May 17th from 7 to 9pm.

Callbacks will be by appointment the following weekend.

As always at Phoenix, all roles are open and will remain so until the close of open auditions. All ethnicities are encouraged to participate.

The artistic staff advises those auditioning to prepare 32 bars of a song in the style of the show and be prepared for a dance audition. Women should wear character shoes, men should wear sneakers.

All auditions and rehearsals will be at the Phoenix Performing Arts Center, 59 Chestnut Street in Red Bank. The show will run at the Count Basie Theatre from Friday, July 14th through  Sunday, July 23rd.

Character Descriptions

CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS

The Sharks – A Puerto Rican gang

Maria: A hopeless romantic and innocent young girl. She falls in love with Tony and finds herself at the center of the violent conflict between the two gangs. Strong soprano. Bb3-C6. Some dancing.

Anita: Feisty and assertive. She dispenses “older sister” advice to Maria and tries to shield her from the dangers of the gangs. Bernardo’s girlfriend. Strong Alto F3-F5. Strong dance required.

Bernardo: A proud, strong, handsome man. Leader of the Sharks. Bernardo seeks to carve out a territory as a sense of identity for himself and his friends. G2-E4. Strong dance required.

Chino: An angry and, at times, naïve Shark who turns vengeful. Suitor to Maria and friend of Bernardo.

Rosalia: Indio’s girlfriend. A3-F#5

Fransisca: Luis’ girlfriend. A3-F#5

Consuela: Pepe’s girlfriend. F3-D5

Sharks and Shark girls: All vocal types needed. Strong dancing required. 

The Jets – A Caucasian gang

Tony: A romantic young man and former leader of the Jets. He has found a new lifestyle that does not involve gangs. Tony finds himself violently torn between his friendships and love. Falls in love with Maria. Genuinely sweet and sincere. Strong tenor voice Bb2-A4 (opt C5). Limited dancing.

Riff: An athletic, quick-tempered leader of the Jets. He seeks to eliminate the Sharks and establish the Jets’ dominance in the neighborhood. Tony’s best friend. Strong singer. A2-G4. Strong dance required.

Anybodys: A spunky tomboy who is desperate to become a member of the Jets. The other Jets mock her ambitions but generally appreciate her. Full of heart and energy. Dance required.

Diesel: Second in command of the Jets. A2-C4

Action: Quick-tempered. Always ready for a fight. G2-G4

A-Rab: Slightly less quick-tempered than Action. Db3-G4

Baby John: The youngest Jet. Bb2-G4

Jets and Jet girls: All vocal types needed. Strong dancing required. 

The Adults (Speaking roles. No singing or dance required):

Doc: The adult owner of the store where the Jets hang out. Old fashioned and wise in his ways.

Officer Krupke: The local beat cop. He has no patience for the gangs’ conflicts and tries to keep tensions from erupting. He is regularly mocked by the local gangs.

Detective Schrank: A local police detective frustrated by the ongoing violence between the gangs. Blunt, brash, racist and unapologetic.

Glad Hand: Nerdy, overly-cheerful and ill-equipped social director at the school dance.
