Auditions announced for Phoenix’s revival of West Side Story, opening at the Count Basie Theatre in July!



Producer Jim Marhold has assembled his production staff and announced open auditions for the July production of West Side Story.

Heading up the artistic staff as Director is Anthony Greco who directed the Phoenix revivals of White Christmas and Ragtime. Bob Sammond returns as musical director, a role he has played for many, many Phoenix shows. Jessica O’Brien will choreograph. Her last Phoenix assignment was as the director/choreographer of Evita in 2015.

Ashley Cusack and Tom Martini have signed on as the set design team, Joanne Penrose returns to design costumes and Anthony Calicchio continues his role as Phoenix’s favorite lighting designer.

Open auditions will be held on

Saturday, May 13th from noon to 3pm,

Monday, May 15th from 7 to 9pm and

Wednesday, May 17th from 7 to 9pm.

Callbacks will be by appointment the following weekend.

As always at Phoenix, all roles are open and will remain so until the close of open auditions. All ethnicities are encouraged to participate.

The artistic staff advises those auditioning to prepare 32 bars of a song in the style of the show and be prepared for a dance audition. Women should wear character shoes, men should wear sneakers.

All auditions and rehearsals will be at the Phoenix Performing Arts Center, 59 Chestnut Street in Red Bank. The show will run at the Count Basie Theatre from Friday, July 14th through  Sunday, July 23rd.

Character Descriptions


The Sharks – A Puerto Rican gang

Maria: A hopeless romantic and innocent young girl. She falls in love with Tony and finds herself at the center of the violent conflict between the two gangs. Strong soprano. Bb3-C6. Some dancing.

Anita: Feisty and assertive. She dispenses “older sister” advice to Maria and tries to shield her from the dangers of the gangs. Bernardo’s girlfriend. Strong Alto F3-F5. Strong dance required.

Bernardo: A proud, strong, handsome man. Leader of the Sharks. Bernardo seeks to carve out a territory as a sense of identity for himself and his friends. G2-E4. Strong dance required.

Chino: An angry and, at times, naïve Shark who turns vengeful. Suitor to Maria and friend of Bernardo.

Rosalia: Indio’s girlfriend. A3-F#5

Fransisca: Luis’ girlfriend. A3-F#5

Consuela: Pepe’s girlfriend. F3-D5

Sharks and Shark girls: All vocal types needed. Strong dancing required. 

The Jets – A Caucasian gang

Tony: A romantic young man and former leader of the Jets. He has found a new lifestyle that does not involve gangs. Tony finds himself violently torn between his friendships and love. Falls in love with Maria. Genuinely sweet and sincere. Strong tenor voice Bb2-A4 (opt C5). Limited dancing.

Riff: An athletic, quick-tempered leader of the Jets. He seeks to eliminate the Sharks and establish the Jets’ dominance in the neighborhood. Tony’s best friend. Strong singer. A2-G4. Strong dance required.

Anybodys: A spunky tomboy who is desperate to become a member of the Jets. The other Jets mock her ambitions but generally appreciate her. Full of heart and energy. Dance required.

Diesel: Second in command of the Jets. A2-C4

Action: Quick-tempered. Always ready for a fight. G2-G4

A-Rab: Slightly less quick-tempered than Action. Db3-G4

Baby John: The youngest Jet. Bb2-G4

Jets and Jet girls: All vocal types needed. Strong dancing required. 

The Adults (Speaking roles. No singing or dance required):

Doc: The adult owner of the store where the Jets hang out. Old fashioned and wise in his ways.

Officer Krupke: The local beat cop. He has no patience for the gangs’ conflicts and tries to keep tensions from erupting. He is regularly mocked by the local gangs.

Detective Schrank: A local police detective frustrated by the ongoing violence between the gangs. Blunt, brash, racist and unapologetic.

Glad Hand: Nerdy, overly-cheerful and ill-equipped social director at the school dance.
